French bank Crédit Mutuel Arkéa has suffered a cyberattack that resulted in the theft of cryptocurrency worth at least $133 million, according to reports from specialists who track cryptocurrency transactions and investigate online fraud.
The account ZachXBT reported on the social media platform X on Wednesday that the theft unfolded over several days. It said the bank’s delay in notifying the relevant authorities and requesting a halt to the transfers allowed the attackers to launder at least $30 million of the stolen funds.
The bank, which is headquartered in the Brittany region of France, confirmed reports that it had been targeted in a cyberattack but did not disclose the total financial losses.
Bank officials said they had decided to temporarily suspend certain transactions to secure operations and prevent further fraudulent activity.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the bank said the attack was under control and emphasized that its customers would not be affected by the incident.
