Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic minority leader in the U.S. House of Representatives, has officially announced his candidacy for Speaker following his party’s sweeping victory in the midterm elections, which gave Democrats a majority in the House.
According to reports, Jeffries sent a letter to fellow Democrats seeking their support for his bid, amid widespread expectations that he will win the position. If elected, he would become the first African American to serve as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.
“I am writing to humbly ask for your support in my candidacy for the next Speaker of the United States House of Representatives,” Jeffries wrote.
“We must now deliver the transformational change the American people are demanding,” he added, emphasizing that every member of the new Democratic majority would play an influential role in the work of the House.
Jeffries’ Legislative Priorities
Jeffries said his legislative agenda would focus on three main priorities: affordability, accountability and American values.
His announcement came after Democrats secured a sweeping victory in Tuesday’s elections, giving them a comfortable majority in the House and strengthening his position to become Speaker, with no significant opposition expected within his party.
Several progressive Democrats and newly elected representatives from traditionally Republican districts had previously declined to pledge their support for Jeffries. However, the expanded Democratic majority has reduced their ability to use their votes to secure political concessions from him.
Democratic Representative Greg Stanton said the scale of the victory gives Jeffries greater room to lead the House without having to yield to pressure from small factions within the party.
Changes Expected in House Leadership
The incoming Democratic leadership slate is also expected to face little serious competition. Katherine Clark is seeking the position of Majority Leader, Pete Aguilar is running for Majority Whip, Ted Lieu is seeking to become chair of the Democratic Caucus, and Joe Neguse is expected to pursue the position of Assistant Speaker.
In a related development, reports indicate that current Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson will not seek to renew his leadership role following his party’s loss of control of the chamber.
The developments are expected to pave the way for a reshaping of both parties’ leadership as the new Congress convenes in January 2027.
