US President Donald Trump has appointed Adam Tilley, the current Assistant Secretary of the Army, as acting Secretary of the Army, just days after Dan Driscoll resigned from the position amid reports of disagreements with senior Pentagon officials.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Tilley would assume the position “effective immediately,” describing him as a “great patriot” who is respected by everyone.
Who Is Adam Tilley?
Tilley was sworn in as Assistant Secretary of the Army in August 2025 after his nomination was confirmed by the US Senate. He currently serves as Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works and has spent much of his professional career working on Capitol Hill.
His appointment comes as the Army undergoes a leadership transition following Driscoll’s departure. The former Army secretary did not provide an official explanation for his resignation.
Reported Disagreements With Defense Secretary
Reports have widely linked Driscoll’s resignation to disagreements and clashes with US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, although no official explanation has been issued regarding the circumstances of his departure.
Driscoll, 39, became Secretary of the Army in February 2025, making him the youngest person to hold the position in US history.
Driscoll’s Focus on Drones
Driscoll became known within military circles for his strong focus on drones and unmanned systems, which he viewed as increasingly important to the future of warfare. His emphasis on the technology earned him the nickname “the drone man.”
His departure marks another significant change among senior military and civilian officials during the Trump administration.
