The British government is considering imposing new sanctions on Iran amid suspicions of a possible link between Tehran and a security incident that occurred near the Fairford air base in the United Kingdom.
British Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said the government could consider additional sanctions against Iran, stressing that London would assess the appropriate response once clear findings emerge regarding the incident.
Streeting confirmed that investigations are still underway and that the British authorities will determine the appropriate measures after establishing the circumstances of the incident and whether any potential connection to Iran exists.
Earlier, Iranian media reported that Iran’s Foreign Ministry had summoned the British ambassador to Tehran, Hugo Shorter, following British statements suggesting a possible Iranian connection to the security incident near the base, which hosts U.S. aircraft.
On September 27, British police announced a “major incident” near RAF Fairford.
Authorities initially detained five British nationals on suspicion of involvement in terrorism-related activities and offenses involving explosives. They were later released on bail.
Later, authorities arrested a British-Iranian dual national as part of the investigation into the incident. He was also subsequently released on bail.
The investigation remains ongoing to establish the circumstances of the incident and determine whether there is any actual connection to Iran, as London continues to assess the developments before deciding on any further measures.
