The Syrian and Jordanian foreign ministries announced in a joint statement that they had agreed to establish a joint security committee to investigate the details of recent Jordanian airstrikes on sites in Daraa province in southern Syria, assess their consequences, and strengthen security and field coordination between the two countries.
The announcement followed a phone call between Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani and Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi. The two officials discussed bilateral relations and the implications of the recent military operations.
Both ministers emphasized the deep historical ties between their countries and their shared commitment to strengthening cooperation and resolving disagreements through responsible dialogue, based on the close link between the security and stability of Syria and Jordan.
Jordan Explains the Reasons for the Strikes
Safadi said the Jordanian Armed Forces carried out the operations based on field intelligence to neutralize what he described as confirmed threats and prevent imminent terrorist attacks targeting Jordan’s security. He stated that the strikes targeted sites belonging to the Islamic State (ISIS) group.
The Jordanian foreign minister expressed deep regret over the civilian casualties reported during the operations, offered condolences to the Syrian people, and wished those injured a speedy recovery. He also reaffirmed Jordan’s commitment to protecting Syrian civilians.
Safadi stressed that Jordan fully respects Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, security and stability, adding that Syria’s security and stability are an integral part of Jordan’s own security.
Security Coordination to Combat Terrorism and Smuggling
The two sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in addressing shared challenges, particularly counterterrorism and the smuggling of drugs and weapons across their common border, through effective and sustainable institutional channels.
According to the statement, the joint security committee will examine the details and circumstances of the recent operations, assess their consequences, and develop field and intelligence coordination mechanisms to address terrorist threats, protect civilians and safeguard Syrian sovereignty.
Both ministers underscored the importance of continued dialogue and direct coordination to preserve the historic ties between the two countries and strengthen their shared security.
