Iraq has suspended incoming flights from Iran and canceled flights bound for Iran through Najaf International Airport in southern Iraq, effective Friday, September 25, 2026.
The airport administration said the decision was made in accordance with government directives, with the suspension taking effect at 2 a.m. on Friday.
The move follows a similar decision by Baghdad International Airport, which previously suspended incoming flights from Iran amid restrictions affecting Iranian airlines.
The suspension at Baghdad Airport had prompted several flights from Iran to be redirected to Najaf, one of the main destinations for Iranian travelers visiting Iraq’s Shiite holy sites.
The latest decision comes amid growing tensions between the United States and Iran over the aviation sector. Washington has warned of possible additional sanctions against airports and companies providing services to Iranian airlines.
Tehran, meanwhile, has warned of the potential consequences of the US measures and suggested that they could lead to disruptions at airports in neighboring and other regional countries.
Iranian airlines had also canceled all flights to the United Arab Emirates on September 24, as regional air travel restrictions continued to affect international operations.
