
The Wall Street Journal has warned of the potentially severe economic consequences of the El Niño climate phenomenon, saying it could cause economic losses amounting to trillions of dollars, with tropical economies likely to bear the largest share of the damage.
The newspaper reported that record-high ocean temperatures are intensifying climate-related effects, potentially worsening the economic impact of El Niño on the global economy.
El Niño is a natural climate phenomenon that develops in the Pacific Ocean and can alter weather patterns around the world, triggering droughts, heavy rainfall and flooding, with significant consequences for agriculture and food security.
The newspaper quoted Christopher Callahan, a climate scientist at Indiana University, as warning that the economic consequences of El Niño could be “extremely serious.”
According to a study conducted by Callahan, El Niño could lead to trillions of dollars in lost economic output, with countries and economies in tropical regions expected to suffer disproportionately.
El Niño’s Impact on the Panama Canal
The effects of El Niño extend beyond agriculture and weather to transportation and logistics.
The Wall Street Journal reported that declining water levels in Gatun Lake, which supplies the water needed to operate the Panama Canal, forced canal operators to reduce the number of ships allowed to transit the waterway.
The restrictions have pushed transit costs significantly higher, reaching around $2.5 million per vessel in recent weeks, compared with approximately $800,000 under normal conditions.
El Niño Growing Stronger
A previous study by the University of Michigan found that the intensity of El Niño has increased by around 40% over the past four decades, reaching levels among the highest recorded during the current millennium.
El Niño is associated with warmer-than-normal surface waters in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, while La Niña represents the opposite phase, characterized by cooler surface waters in those regions.
Both phenomena can significantly influence global wind patterns, ocean currents and weather conditions, contributing to droughts in some regions while causing heavy rainfall and flooding in others.
El Niño and La Niña occur at irregular intervals, resulting in major fluctuations in the global climate system. One example is Australia’s prolonged drought between 1996 and 2010, which was associated with climate conditions linked to El Niño before easing as La Niña conditions became more dominant.
