Syria closed the Nassib border crossing with Jordan on Tuesday, suspending passenger and commercial traffic in both directions amid escalating developments in Daraa province, the Syrian General Authority for Border Crossings and Customs announced.
The closure followed airstrikes carried out by the Jordanian air force against what Amman described as militant hideouts in southern Syria. Jordan said suspects linked to last week’s deadly church attack in the kingdom had connections to groups it described as terrorist organizations operating in Syria.
The Nassib crossing is Jordan’s only border crossing with Syria used for passenger travel and commercial traffic.
Damascus Says Jordan Failed to Coordinate Before Strikes
The Syrian government said Jordan had not coordinated with Damascus before launching airstrikes on targets in southern Syria on Monday.
A statement carried by Syria’s state news agency said no prior coordination had taken place with the Syrian side regarding the Jordanian military operation.
Syrian authorities said they were investigating the strikes and discussing their implications with Amman, while emphasizing the importance of joint security coordination in border areas.
Syria’s Foreign Ministry said it had informed Jordan of its strong objection to military operations conducted inside Syrian territory without prior coordination.
Communication and coordination with Jordan were underway to address the consequences of the incident while safeguarding security and Syria’s territorial sovereignty, the ministry added.
At Least Six Killed in Jordanian Strikes
Syrian authorities reported that at least six people were killed in Monday’s airstrikes in the country’s south.
Health officials in Daraa province said the victims included three children and a woman.
Syria’s Civil Defense agency reported a higher death toll of seven people across several locations. Six were killed in Daraa province, including three children, while another man died when a house was struck in neighboring Sweida province.
The agency said rescue teams were still working to recover the man’s body from beneath the rubble.
