South Korean President Lee Jae Myung discussed the Strait of Hormuz with French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday, with the talks focusing on possible contributions to international efforts to ensure the security and freedom of navigation in the strategic waterway.
Seoul’s presidential office clarified that the discussions did not involve plans to deploy South Korean troops.
Seoul Reviews Possible Role in Hormuz Security
National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac said South Korea is reviewing potential ways to contribute to international efforts aimed at maintaining safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
He stressed that the review was not connected to ongoing investment talks with the United States.
Wi also revealed that Iran had requested explanations from Seoul over reports concerning a possible South Korean role in efforts to enhance security in the Strait of Hormuz.
South Korea’s discussions come amid growing international attention to the strategic waterway, a major route for global energy shipments.
