The South Korean military announced that North Korea launched at least one projectile toward waters off its eastern coast on Saturday, without providing details about the type of weapon involved.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said it had not yet determined whether the projectile was a ballistic missile or another type of weapon.
The launch came amid heightened tensions between the two Koreas following the explosion of landmines last month, which injured three South Korean soldiers. Seoul and the U.S.-led United Nations Command have accused North Korea of being responsible for the explosions.
In a related development, Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, rejected a South Korean proposal to hold talks on border demarcation, saying Pyongyang does not negotiate military sovereignty issues with what she described as hostile states.
North Korean state media quoted Kim Yo Jong as saying that her country does not determine its borders through negotiations, but through the exercise of its sovereign rights, including the use of force. She stressed that this position represents a standing policy of the North Korean government.
