US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the administration of President Donald Trump is intensifying economic pressure on Iran, emphasizing that Washington will continue pursuing companies and entities that provide financing, supplies or other forms of support to Tehran.
Bessent said between 80% and 90% of international flights departing from Iran have been suspended, raising questions about how Iranian officials attending United Nations General Assembly meetings will return home amid the disruption to most international air travel.
US Threatens Action Against Companies and Bank Accounts
Bessent warned companies and entities dealing with Iran that economic pressure would continue, saying the US administration is working to identify businesses and organizations providing financing, services and supplies to Tehran.
He said Washington would continue pursuing those companies and their bank accounts as part of a broader policy aimed at restricting Iran’s sources of financing and economic support.
New Restrictions Target Iranian Aviation Sector
Bessent’s remarks came as new US restrictions targeting Iran’s aviation sector took effect.
The measures apply to companies providing services to Iranian airlines, including fuel supplies, ground-handling services and ticket sales. Entities found violating the restrictions could face US sanctions.
The measures are part of the broader economic pressure being imposed by the Trump administration on Iran, as restrictions continue to target sectors and companies linked to the Iranian economy.
