Iran’s official IRNA news agency reported on Saturday that two explosions occurred east of Qeshm Island in Hormozgan Province, southern Iran, amid escalating tensions in the region.
Meanwhile, the Fars News Agency reported hearing several explosions on the islands of Qeshm and Jask, saying that the nature of the blasts and their exact locations had not yet been determined.
Explosions on Qeshm Follow U.S. Strikes on Iranian Air Defenses
The developments come after U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday that American forces had carried out limited strikes targeting Iran’s air defense systems.
Speaking to reporters after arriving in West Palm Beach, Florida, Trump said Iran had established a small anti-aircraft defense system, but U.S. forces had completely destroyed it in approximately 15 minutes, or perhaps as little as five minutes.
The incidents come amid continued tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime routes for global oil and natural gas shipments, as Tehran and Washington remain at odds over maritime security and arrangements for control of the waterway.
