U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday that he would “soon” declare the Strait of Hormuz part of U.S. territory, while claiming that Iran was suffering a major defeat.
“Pretty soon, I’ll be declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory of the United States. It’s true,” Trump said with a chuckle during a political rally at a police academy in New York state.
Trump’s remarks come amid heightened tensions over the strategically vital waterway, a major route for global energy shipments, and ongoing confrontation between Washington and Tehran.
