US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the United States is holding productive discussions with Iran, while confirming that Washington will not launch an attack on Tehran before the US midterm congressional elections in November.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the United States was engaged in productive talks with the Islamic Republic of Iran. He also stressed that the US blockade of Iranian ports remains in effect, while oil continues to flow through the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump Rules Out Attack Before Midterm Elections
Trump stated that the United States would not attack Iran at any time before the midterm elections scheduled for November 3.
The announcement comes as the war involving the United States, Israel and Iran continues to have significant political and economic consequences in the US.
The United States and Israel launched strikes against Iran in February, and the conflict, which carries an estimated cost of around $3 billion per month, has become a major issue on the US campaign trail.
Oil Prices and Pressure on Republicans
Trump has repeatedly predicted that oil prices will fall sharply after the elections. However, elevated gasoline prices and the ongoing conflict with Iran are putting additional pressure on Republican candidates and could threaten the party’s congressional majority.
The economic impact of the war has become increasingly important ahead of the November vote, particularly as energy prices remain a major concern for American voters.
Talks Focus on Ending the War and Reopening Hormuz
Over the past several weeks, Iran and the United States have exchanged proposals aimed at ending the conflict and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global energy shipping route.
Trump, however, rejected Tehran’s latest proposal, leaving the two sides facing continued uncertainty despite the ongoing diplomatic discussions.
