US President Donald Trump on Sunday renewed his criticism of Canada after Prime Minister Mark Carney announced retaliatory tariffs on US goods following the breakdown of trade negotiations between Ottawa and Washington.
“Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!!!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
“They have also charged our great farmers, for many years, massive amounts of Tariffs. No more!!!” he added.
Carney announced Saturday that Canada would impose new retaliatory tariffs starting September 8, with the measures expected to target US steel and dairy products.
The escalation comes after new US tariffs of 50 percent on certain Canadian goods took effect Saturday. The measures affect around $20 billion worth of Canadian exports to the United States, equivalent to about 5.5 percent of Canada’s total exports to its southern neighbor.
The latest exchange marks a renewed escalation in trade tensions between the two countries, following the collapse of negotiations aimed at reaching a new trade agreement.
