North Korea announced that it had conducted what it described as a “firepower offensive drill,” involving units of the Korean People’s Army and featuring long-range artillery and missile systems, according to state media in Pyongyang.
The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that the drill was held on Saturday and involved five military units from different levels of the Korean People’s Army. The exercise focused on testing offensive firepower and the capabilities of long-range weapons.
South Korea Reports Ballistic Missile Launches
The announcement came after South Korea reported that North Korea had launched several ballistic missiles from the Wonsan area toward the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan.
The developments occurred one day after South Korea, the United States and Japan concluded a five-day joint naval exercise focused on responding to potential threats originating from North Korea.
The timing of the missile launches and the offensive drill, alongside the trilateral military exercises, highlights the continuing military tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
New Combat Systems Featured in the Drill
KCNA did not specify where the drill was conducted, but said it involved what it described as “new combat systems,” including a range of attack drones and missile systems.
According to the report, the weapons used during the exercise included various types of attack drones, tactical cruise missiles, heavy-caliber multiple rocket launchers using thermobaric technology, and tactical ballistic missiles.
The agency said the weapons demonstrated “enormous destructive power” during the drill as a result of the high intensity of the firepower directed at designated targets.
KCNA also claimed that the weapons achieved a 100% accuracy rate in striking their targets, presenting the exercise as evidence of the effectiveness of North Korea’s combat systems and their ability to deliver precise and concentrated attacks.
Rising Military Tensions on the Korean Peninsula
The drill comes amid heightened military tensions on the Korean Peninsula, as North Korea continues to develop and test various missile and military systems.
At the same time, South Korea continues to strengthen its defense cooperation with the United States and Japan, including joint military exercises aimed at improving readiness and responding to potential threats from Pyongyang.
The latest drill, conducted amid the ongoing military activities of South Korea, the United States and Japan, adds to tensions in the region as North Korea continues to showcase its missile capabilities and develop new combat systems.
