Iran has not made any decision to resume negotiations with the United States, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Saturday, stressing that messages exchanged between the two sides through Qatar and Pakistan do not constitute formal talks.
In an interview with Iranian outlet Shahrara News, Araghchi said discussions with Oman were being held separately and focused on establishing a maritime route through the Strait of Hormuz. He added that the United States would need to meet certain conditions before shipping through the strategic waterway could resume.
Araghchi’s remarks came a day after US President Donald Trump said he would “soon” declare the Strait of Hormuz part of US territory, while claiming that Iran was being heavily defeated.
“Pretty soon I’ll be declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory of the United States. It’s true,” Trump said Friday, speaking at a political rally at a police academy in New York state.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global energy corridor, through which a significant share of the world’s oil and gas shipments passes.
