Germany’s Transport Ministry has announced the launch of a new drone detection system at Berlin Brandenburg Airport, aimed at identifying drones at an early stage near approach and departure routes and alerting authorities to potential risks to air traffic.
System Designed to Detect Drones Around the Airport
The ministry said German air traffic control had begun operating the system at Berlin Brandenburg Airport. It is designed to detect drones early, particularly near flight paths used for takeoffs and landings.
The system can alert relevant authorities to potential threats that could affect aviation safety.
During a visit to Berlin Brandenburg Airport, German Transport Minister Steffen Bilger said the government was taking seriously the growing threat posed by drones near airports.
He stressed the importance of acting quickly and equipping Germany’s international airports with technology capable of detecting such aircraft.
Similar Systems Planned for Other Airports
The move follows repeated drone sightings near several German airports, prompting authorities to strengthen their ability to detect drones around approach and departure areas.
The Transport Ministry said more international airports across Germany are expected to be equipped with similar detection systems over the course of the year.
Seven Incidents Temporarily Halted Flights in Berlin
Berlin Brandenburg Airport recorded more drone sightings in the first half of the year than any other airport in Germany.
Seven of those incidents led to temporary suspensions of flight operations, highlighting the potential impact drones can have on flight schedules and the safety of takeoff and landing procedures.
