The United States on Saturday renewed its call for Hezbollah to surrender its weapons, stressing that the Lebanese government is the “sole legitimate” party authorized to represent the country and mediate discussions over its future.
The US State Department reiterated its position through a spokesperson in response to a media inquiry. The comments were published on the official X account of the US Embassy in Beirut.
Washington Urges Hezbollah to Hand Over Its Weapons
The State Department said the “Trilateral Framework” makes clear that the Lebanese government is the only legitimate interlocutor for discussions concerning Lebanon’s future and matters involving the Lebanese people.
The US official said Washington stands with the people of Lebanon and wants the country to become safe and fully sovereign. However, the official argued that achieving that goal requires the Iran-backed Hezbollah group to disarm.
According to the State Department spokesperson, if Hezbollah decides to give up its weapons, it can engage directly with the Lebanese state and inform authorities that it is prepared to hand over its arms.
The official added that such a step could open the door to narrowing differences among the parties involved.
US Accuses Hezbollah of Following Iran’s Directives
The US State Department official also claimed that Hezbollah has so far refused to engage in talks with the Lebanese government, the United States or Israel, arguing that the group is instead acting on instructions from Iran.
“It’s time for Hezbollah to do what’s best for Lebanon and the Lebanese people,” the official said.
The latest remarks reflect Washington’s continued pressure for Hezbollah’s weapons to be placed under the authority of the Lebanese state, while emphasizing its support for Lebanon’s sovereignty and the role of the government as the country’s legitimate representative.
