The UN Security Council will hold a meeting next week to discuss the rapid development of artificial intelligence and its security implications, according to a French diplomatic source cited by AFP.
The source said AI is also expected to feature prominently on the agenda of the UN General Assembly, with the Security Council meeting focusing on security risks linked to the rapid advancement of the technology.
France, which holds the Security Council presidency in September, is pushing for discussions on the potential risks AI could pose to humanity, amid growing concerns that advanced systems could be misused in cyberattacks or lead to a loss of control over autonomous systems.
The initiative comes as debate intensifies over the need for safeguards on AI development. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has called for slowing the development of the most advanced AI models on safety grounds, a position supported by several technology industry leaders.
US President Donald Trump, however, has rejected calls for new restrictions on AI development and has played down concerns about the technology’s potential risks.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk previously warned that advanced AI could pose an existential threat to humanity and called for international “red lines” to ensure the technology is developed and used safely.
