US President Donald Trump said Washington is holding contacts with Yemen’s Houthi movement, adding that his administration would continue to monitor developments in the region.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said Saudi Arabia was capable of defending itself, but described the Houthis’ actions as “very bad.” He did not provide further details about the ongoing contacts or their possible outcomes.
“I haven’t spoken to the Saudi Crown Prince yet, but I will,” Trump said.
US Contacts Amid Escalating Attacks on Saudi Arabia
Trump’s remarks come amid escalating attacks on targets inside Saudi Arabia, as Washington considers the possibility of joining Saudi strikes against the Houthis.
In previous statements, Trump indicated that the United States could participate in such strikes, saying his administration would make a decision quickly following the latest attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh.
Trump did not clarify whether the contacts with the Houthis were intended to contain the escalation or reach an understanding regarding the attacks. He also did not announce a final decision on whether US forces would take part in any military operations against the group.
