The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency announced that it had received a report of an oil tanker being struck by an unidentified projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, sparking a fire in the engine room. No crew members were reported injured.
According to the agency, the tanker’s captain reported that the vessel was preparing to leave the Strait of Hormuz when an unknown projectile struck its side, causing the fire.
Investigation Underway to Assess Damage
UKMTO said the extent of the material damage to the tanker, as well as any potential environmental impact, remained unclear. Relevant authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Attacks on Ships in the Strait of Hormuz Intensify
The incident comes amid an increase in attacks targeting commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz. UKMTO has documented several similar incidents since the beginning of October.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most strategically important maritime routes. Before the outbreak of the war, approximately one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies passed through the waterway, making it a critical hub for international trade and energy security.
The strait has taken on even greater significance amid tensions surrounding the confrontation between Iran and the United States, raising concerns that continued attacks could threaten maritime safety and disrupt global energy supplies.
