US President Donald Trump has escalated his rhetoric over the Strait of Hormuz after posting a map of the strategic waterway on his Truth Social platform labeled “New American Land.”
The move came after Trump renewed his calls for US sovereignty over the strait, saying Friday that he considers the Strait of Hormuz “American land.”
Trump Maintains Tough Position on Strait of Hormuz
Trump’s latest post comes amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran, ongoing disruptions to maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, and declining Iranian oil exports.
The Trump administration is also preparing a new package of economic sanctions against Iran, raising concerns over the potential impact on the Iranian economy and countries maintaining trade ties with Tehran, particularly China.
US Prepares New Sanctions on Iran
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to announce details of the new sanctions package on Monday, which he has described as the “toughest in history” against Iran.
Bessent said Washington plans to intensify economic pressure on Tehran, while Trump warned countries providing Iran with what he described as “any lifeline” that they could face economic consequences.
The developments come as Iran faces mounting pressure from disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, falling oil exports and growing strain on its fuel market and broader economy.
Previous Attempts to Restore Freedom of Navigation
The United States and Iran reached ceasefire agreements in April and June aimed at restoring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and paving the way toward ending the conflict, which has lasted for around six months.
However, both agreements quickly collapsed, leaving tensions between Washington and Tehran unresolved and raising further concerns over the future of navigation through one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes.
