Lebanon’s Prosecutor General, Rami al-Hajj, has issued arrest warrants for two Hezbollah members accused of illegally transporting a shipment containing more than 500 kilograms of explosives to Beirut, according to information reported by Naharnet, citing a judicial source.
Investigators reportedly suspect Hussein Abdullah and Ali Ayoub, identified as members of Hezbollah’s armed wing, of attempting to transport the shipment, which included TNT and C-4 plastic explosives, to the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital.
Security agencies have been instructed to track down and arrest the two suspects as soon as possible ahead of their questioning in connection with the case.
Hezbollah’s leadership had previously called on Lebanese authorities to return the seized shipment and release those detained while accompanying it.
Explosives Shipment Intercepted at Dhahr al-Baidar
The case dates back to October 11, when security forces stopped a truck carrying explosives at a checkpoint in the Dhahr al-Baidar area. According to the report, it was the third and largest shipment of weapons and explosives intercepted by security agencies since the beginning of the month.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam have been following the investigation and pledged to continue monitoring the case until it is concluded.
On October 17, Lebanese army units deployed in Beirut’s southern suburbs, a Hezbollah stronghold, setting up checkpoints and conducting patrols along several streets in the area.
