The United States has sent two additional Patriot missile batteries to Saudi Arabia and Qatar in recent weeks, in a move aimed at strengthening protection for critical oil and gas facilities amid concerns that the two countries could come under attack if Washington resumes large-scale military operations against Iran.
Reports indicate that one Patriot battery was deployed in Saudi Arabia to protect a major oil facility, while the second was sent to Qatar to safeguard a natural gas installation. The deployments are part of broader U.S. efforts to reassure its Gulf allies about the security of their vital infrastructure.
The moves come as U.S. President Donald Trump considers the possibility of resuming a military campaign against Iran in the coming weeks. Riyadh and Doha have previously warned of potential Iranian retaliation against energy facilities in both countries if Washington launches extensive attacks on Iranian infrastructure.
According to the reports, these concerns have contributed to the U.S. administration’s decision to intensify economic pressure on Tehran rather than launch a broad military offensive. Saudi Arabia’s position is also considered important in any potential U.S. military action, as Washington could require access to Saudi airspace. Riyadh, however, may be reluctant to grant such access without sufficient guarantees for the protection of its oil facilities.
US Military Moves Toward the Middle East
Meanwhile, the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt and its strike group have departed San Diego for the Middle East and are expected to reach the region by mid-November. The carrier could join one of the two U.S. carrier strike groups already operating in the region or replace one of them.
The USS Makin Island amphibious ready group has also headed toward the Middle East. The group includes three amphibious ships and thousands of U.S. Marines and is expected to arrive by the end of November.
The movements, together with the deployment of the two Patriot batteries, reflect an increased U.S. military presence in the region as tensions surrounding Iran continue and concerns grow over the possibility of a wider military confrontation.
