Several explosions were heard on Iran’s Qeshm Island late Tuesday night and early Wednesday, with no official explanation so far regarding the nature or cause of the blasts.
Explosions Reportedly Heard From the Sea
Local sources said the sounds appeared to come from the direction of the sea, while Iranian authorities have yet to issue an official statement explaining the incident.
Explosions have been heard repeatedly on Qeshm Island in recent days. Two blasts were reported on the island in southern Iran four days earlier, with reports also indicating that the sounds came from the sea.
Days before that, explosions were heard in the area, prompting official sources in Hormozgan province to say they were linked to air-defense systems being tested and evaluated.
Rising Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz
The latest developments come amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran around the Strait of Hormuz, which has emerged as one of the main flashpoints in the confrontation between the two countries.
The strategic waterway has experienced disruptions to maritime traffic, along with mutual threats concerning its security and continued operation.
Shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz declined further at the beginning of the week as attacks in the region intensified.
Preliminary data showed that only four vessels passed through the strait on Monday, compared with 10 vessels the previous day.
Before the war began on February 28, around 125 large commercial vessels crossed the strait each day, including oil and gas tankers, bulk carriers and container ships. These vessels carried nearly 20% of the world’s daily crude oil and liquefied natural gas supplies.
Talks Over Maritime Traffic Management
Tehran and Muscat have been holding discussions on an agreement to manage maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran has maintained that shipping through the strait will not return to previous levels and has proposed the possibility of imposing a service fee on vessels passing through the waterway. Several Gulf countries, as well as the United States, have rejected the proposal.
The latest explosions on Qeshm Island add another layer of uncertainty to the region’s security situation as tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz continue, with potential implications for global shipping and energy supplies.
