Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel provided Britain with intelligence warning of a potential attack it believed was backed by Iran, amid an ongoing investigation into a security incident near the Royal Air Force base at Fairford.
In a televised interview on Wednesday evening, Netanyahu said Israel had shared information about the potential attack with British authorities, adding without providing further details: “We provided the British with intelligence that an attack was going to take place, an Iranian-sponsored attack.”
British Investigation Into Fairford Base Incident
Netanyahu’s remarks came after British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said London had identified indications of possible Iranian involvement in a security incident near Fairford air base, which is used by U.S. forces. He said the investigation remained complex and was still underway.
British police had detained five people in their 20s on suspicion of terrorism and explosives-related offenses. They were later released on bail without charges being filed.
The arrests followed the sighting of three vehicles heading toward the base after police received two calls in the early hours of Sunday — one from one of the detainees and another from a local farmer.
Iran Denies Allegations as Washington Monitors Incident
Iran, meanwhile, denied any involvement in the incident, with its embassy in London describing the allegations as “malicious.” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Britain was “looking in the wrong direction.”
U.S. President Donald Trump said Washington was examining the circumstances surrounding the incident as British authorities continued their investigation into what happened and who may have been behind it.
