Several explosions were heard on Monday on Qeshm Island in southern Iran, according to the Iranian state news agency, which cited local sources saying the sounds appeared to have come from the sea.
The agency did not provide details about the cause or nature of the explosions. There were also no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
Repeated Explosions Reported Near the Island
Qeshm Island holds strategic importance because of its location in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime routes for transporting oil and natural gas. The island lies off Iran’s southern coast, near the city of Bandar Abbas and along the northern side of the strait.
Reports of explosions near the island have emerged several times in recent months amid escalating military tensions between the United States and Iran.
Last September, the Iranian news agency reported hearing a sound resembling an explosion coming from the sea. Iranian state television later denied that an explosion had occurred, suggesting the sound may have resulted from warning shots fired at vessels violating maritime navigation rules.
Mediation Efforts Between Washington and Tehran Continue
The incident comes as communication and Qatari mediation efforts between Washington and Tehran continue, seeking to reach an understanding that could end the war and prevent renewed US strikes.
US President Donald Trump previously said that negotiations with Iran were progressing well. However, he also indicated that Washington had yet to make a decision on certain Iranian objectives, adding that the United States was in no hurry to resume military operations.
Current diplomatic efforts are focused on an Iranian proposal that includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the lifting of the US blockade on Iranian ports, while postponing discussions on the nuclear issue until a later stage.
