The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is considering imposing additional trade restrictions on Canada in response to tariff measures announced by Ottawa on American goods, Bloomberg reported.
According to a White House source cited by the agency, the U.S. administration is discussing the possibility of imposing further trade restrictions on Canada after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced measures based on a “dollar-for-dollar” principle in response to U.S. tariffs.
The measures under consideration could include higher tariffs on certain Canadian imports, as well as other trade and economic measures. An official response from the U.S. administration is expected in the coming period.
Growing Trade Tensions Between Washington and Ottawa
The latest developments come amid escalating trade tensions between the United States and Canada, following President Donald Trump’s threats to impose tariffs of up to 50% on Canadian imports, before later announcing that the introduction of new tariffs would be suspended for the time being.
Canada, meanwhile, announced in August that it would impose 50% tariffs on U.S. products, further intensifying the trade dispute between the two countries.
