Washington urges Moscow and Kyiv to return to negotiations and calls for the protection of civilian vessels
The United States has expressed its readiness to play a constructive role in facilitating negotiations between Russia and Ukraine as part of efforts to reach a political settlement and end the ongoing conflict.
Speaking during an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, US Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Dan Nigrea said Washington was prepared to take “any constructive role” that could help facilitate talks between Moscow and Kyiv and contribute to an outcome that would bring the conflict to an end.
Washington Calls for a Return to the Negotiating Table
The US diplomat urged Russia and Ukraine to resume negotiations, while stressing the need to halt attacks targeting civilian vessels or causing damage to them.
Nigrea made the remarks during an emergency Security Council session focused on the latest developments and consequences of the Russia-Ukraine war, particularly threats to civilian shipping and grain exports through the Black Sea.
Growing Concerns Over Black Sea Shipping
The emergency meeting was requested by five European Security Council members — Denmark, France, Greece, Latvia and the United Kingdom — amid escalating attacks and growing concerns over the safety of commercial vessels and maritime traffic in the region.
The US call comes as diplomatic efforts continue to establish a negotiating path between Moscow and Kyiv. However, significant differences remain over the terms of a potential ceasefire and the security guarantees required for a comprehensive agreement.
Washington’s latest position underscores its willingness to support diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions and creating conditions for a political settlement to the conflict.
