The administration of US President Donald Trump has threatened to suspend weapons supplies to Ukraine and halt intelligence sharing with Kyiv as part of efforts to pressure the Ukrainian government to stop attacks on Russia’s energy infrastructure, the Financial Times reported.
The newspaper cited European officials as saying that US officials had contacted Kyiv and several European capitals over the past two days to convey the warnings, seeking to bring an end to Ukrainian strikes targeting Russian oil refineries.
According to the report, the US messages included the possibility of suspending intelligence sharing with Ukraine, as well as halting a European-funded mechanism for purchasing American weapons for Kyiv, known as the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL).
US Pressure on Kyiv and European Capitals
A European official who received a call from a US defense official told the newspaper: “They are calling Kyiv… they are calling everyone in Europe.”
The White House has not confirmed whether the calls took place and has not commented on the reported threats or the political messages conveyed to Ukraine and its European partners.
Trump Announces Energy Ceasefire
The developments follow an announcement by Trump on Sunday that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to a ceasefire covering energy infrastructure, which he said took effect immediately.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, however, said Kyiv was still awaiting details of the US proposal, stressing the need to clarify how the agreement would be implemented and ensure that Moscow complies with its terms.
Zelenskyy had previously expressed Ukraine’s support for halting attacks on energy facilities, saying Kyiv was prepared to stop strikes on Russian energy infrastructure provided that Russia also ceased attacks on Ukraine’s energy facilities.
The reported US pressure highlights Washington’s efforts to limit the escalation between Moscow and Kyiv, as disagreements persist over the terms of a possible ceasefire and the guarantees needed to ensure compliance by both sides.
